Why are my customer’s cards declining when they have money in their accounts?

We run a membership based website where we offer a service to our customers. As a token of good faith, we offer a 3 day trial to the customers for a small $4 processing fee to help cover our expenses. After the 3 day trial, we charge $39.99 a month for our services.

We are having issues with our Merchant account. We have customers who 100% HAVE money in their accounts and when we try and run their cards they are declining.

It happens:
10% of the time for new customers
30% of the time when the customer is converting to a “full member”
30% of the time when the customer is a member and they are being charged the monthly fee anytime after the 1st time.

We have had customers go into they’re online banking while on the phone with us and look at their accounts and verify that they have more than $4 in their account.

All are transactions are done over the phone or online. There is never a card present.

What is the reason that so many of our customer’s credit/debit cards are declining?

Merchant payment processor agent oppty – what should I ask before signing up with UBC or 1 of their iso’s?

I am looking into becoming an agent for United Bank Card. They are a merchant payment processor….http://www.isoprogram.com/why_ubc/

I would like to know the following:

1) is it still a good oppty to go out and sell and secure new merchant credit card accounts if so why

2) what questions should I ask any merchant processing company I or ISO I am considering working with regarding compensation, my portfolio of new accounts i bring in which is my book of business or my business i build up

4) What are the advantages or disadvantages of working directly with UBC as a agent Versus an ISO or under another agent

5) If i go work with an ISO or under another agent what questions should I ask him

6) If i go work with an ISO or under another agent I am concerned my compensation and accounts i sign up, since i do not know how this works what should i be asking about compensation, accounts that I pick up are they his or mine, can i sell them off at some point etccc

7) what should I be getting paid on new accounts and how when i am selling credit card machines and opening new merchant accounts not sure what is considered good fair or excellent compensation
8) what should i be thinking about when trying to decide with which merchant credit card processor to work for, need to know how to determine whom would be a good company to tie up with since I will be building a residual income from the accounts i bring to them concerned about getting hurt in terms of the accounts i secure which is my book of business and whether I can sell it off or whatever not sure of what I should be asking myself concerning this area, need to know what is it exactly I should be asking them when it comes to any new accounts i bring in related to credit card merchant accounts, pos systems, atm’s…

What is a merchant account? How do I get one? Is it difficult? Is it complicated? Are their drawbacks?

When a merchant runs your check through their machine does it check if you have funds available?

When a merchant runs your check through their machine does it check if you have funds available?……I get paid by direct deposit tonight and the funds will be in to clear the check by midnight but at the time I write the check the funds will not be in the account, does the merchant actually check to see if funds are available when they put your check through their system or do they just check to see if you have bounced checks before?

What software package should I use for providing my merchant clients with their account information online?

I sell cafes coffee and need to provide them with their account information online. I don’t quite need a full Customer relationship management software package (as I don’t have a need for all the other tools), just a way where my clients can log into their account on my website and get account information. I don’t want to code this myself, just looking for a FREE OR CHEAP solution to create accounts and then have a way for clients to access that information.

Can I Charge A Customer A Merchant Service Credit Card Fee On Top Of Their Invoice?

Our customers rarely use credit cards as a form of payment. It’s usually a check via mail. But a few do use a Visa or MasterCard once in a blue moon. We are charged 2.75% from our bank for the the total of the credit card purchase. At the time of the credit card transaction can I add the standard percentage on top of the invoice amount? Am I legally allowed to do so? Also, am I legally allowed to markup the 2.75% we are charged on our merchant statement?
